Before dismissing the Lutheran influence from our consideration, it may be permitted to give a translation of a poem in praise of music, which Luther wrote as an introduction to a little book entitled " Lob und Preis der loeblichen Kunst Musica. By H. Johann Walter, Wittenberg, 1538. With a poetical introduction by Dr. Luther." The poem seems scarcely known to some of the biog­raphers of Luther, yet is important as showing the musical creed of the re­former.
